Australia’s first LGBTIAQ+ choir is having a birthday! We’ll be blowing out the candles for 30 years of inclusion, community and music and 15 years of shOUT Youth Chorus. Join us as we kick off a year of festivities with a free community concert at Abbotsford Convent.
Melbourne Gay & Lesbian Chorus is an award-winning choir, with a passionate commitment to creating community through music. The Chorus was created in 1990 by Lawrence McGuire, who brought together a small group of singers during a time of crisis in the LGBT+ community.
Since then we have thrived and our musical journey has been incredible. We have sung repertoire as diverse as Rutter's Requiem, ABBA and Elton John, and performed with icons such as Jimmy Somerville and K. D. Lang.
We are proud to have supported our community through song during significant times and continue that support at rallies, commemorative events and celebrations.
Fortunately the tide is slowly turning and while we as a community, no longer feel under attack every day, there are still many opportunities to show our strength and determination to address inequality through song.
